The Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport in a release said, “It is appalled by the acid attack on Mr. Pretipaul Jaigobin, Assistant Treasurer of the Guyana Cricket Board.”
The release further states, “Whatever the disagreement or conflict between parties, none should take it upon themselves too inflict grievous bodily harm on others. If this dastardly physical attack on Mr. Jaigobin is indeed related to his strongly-held views and criticism with respect to elements on the National Cricket Board, as is alleged, then that makes it all the more reprehensible.”
“The Ministry of Sport is one component of an administration which guarantees the right to freedom of expression and free speech. No democratic society could tolerate any person or group using corrosive liquids to assault another person or group with whom there is disagreement. Such an uncivilised level of behaviour is unacceptable.”
The strongly worded statement notes that, “The Ministry therefore has an interest in seeing the perpetrator of Tuesday night’s criminal attack is swiftly apprehended prior to facing the full brunt of the law. We wish Mr. Jaigobin a speedy recovery and trust that he explores just how he might continue to contribute to Guyana’s cricketing development.”
