He has recorded the coveted century mark but National Race Walk Champion, Rudolph Mitchell is not done as yet. The prolific athlete chalked up his 106th victory on the trot when the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) in collaboration with Ricks and Sari Ltd, staged its Independence Race on Independence Day, Monday April 26 last.
The race commenced at the Barama Plywood Company, Land of Canaan EBD and culminated at the Soesdyke Methodist Church and as he always does, Mitchell shot ahead of the pack at the sound of the whistle to send the walkers on their way. Other notable race walkers in the event included Jeremy Cornelius and Donna Ramkissoon who finished second and third, respectively.
Rudolph Holder, a 74 year old from Den Amstel demonstrated that a man is as old as he feels. The energetic ‘youngster’ displayed his ability despite his years, romping home first in the veteran’s category. Glayson Ralph was also in winners’ row copping the top prize in the junior division.
At the culmination of the event, community leader, Marcia Patrick urged young people to become involved in the sport. She reminded them that unlike many other disciplines race walking is an inexpensive vocation where the participant can reap numerous benefits.
Meanwhile the organizers have planned two events on June 5 and 6 in observation of World Environmental day.
The first takes place around the Soesdyke community while the second would be contested around the inner circuit of the National Park. Trophies and medals would be up for grabs and activities get underway at 06:00hrs sharp.
