Around 14:00 hours yesterday, a fire of unknown origin gutted some sections of the Roma Manufacturing Inc. Bond, which is located at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara. The facility produces mosquito coils and insect repellents.
Reports are that the fire started in a room on the southern side of the building.
While the Managing Director, Lewis Kartik, declined to comment, staffers said that an electrical wire was seen sparking in the said room and it may have caused a can of Fish mosquito spray to explode.
The building served as a bond for mosquito repellents as well as coil factory. The factory was housed in the lower flat of the building.
One staff recalled that she was working at her desk in the lower flat of the building when they started to smell smoke. The woman said that at the time a few other staff members were in the upper flat of the building, among them the Accounting staff who were preparing to pay the workers.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, said that she then noticed thick smoke at the upper flat of the building. She added that once she established that it was a fire in the upper flat of the building she grabbed her personal belongings and exited the building with the other workers.
The woman said that they were forced to break the back fence to escape since the heat at the front exit was too intense.
Another staffer said that when he first noticed the fire he ran for a fire extinguisher as another colleague called the fire service.
Persons in the area said that the fire service responded promptly and was able to confine the fire to the one building.
Despite the blaze, the staffers were still paid their salaries and they will be informed some time early next week, when work at the factory will commence.
Up to press time yesterday, no one could assess the losses, but information received by this newspaper states that several million dollars worth of insect repellents, and mosquito coils were destroyed. At the time of the fire the company was loading a 40-foot container for export.
This is the second time in the sixty years of the company’s existence that fire has struck. Investigations are ongoing.
