As four of the nation’s top football teams get ready for a keen tussle for a berth in the final of this year’s edition of the Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza tomorrow night, only one thing is certain—there will be new champions. The big question is who will ascent the throne?
Conquerors FC tackle the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the feature attraction while Santos FC and Riddim Squad battle in another semi-finals showdown. Coach of the Rhythm Squad FC, Lloyd Millington was very upbeat moments after closing off training sessions yesterday afternoon.
He pointed out that his strikers Sheldon Hope and Gordon Grant are in ominous form that could spell trouble for the opposition.
He further boasted that his team would be fielding a strong defensive line up the likes of Mark Gilkes, Julian Forest, Sherwin Hope and Kevin Roberts. “We are confident going into this match,” said Millington. “We prepared diligently and we intend to win this tournament,” he concluded. On their journey to their present stage, Riddim Squad upset Alpha 5-3 on penalty kicks while defeating Grove Hi-tech 2-1.
Santos is in ripping form especially after their 3 nil demolition of Seawall FC in their last encounter. William Europe and Glenovan Edmonds, the two players that rocked Seawall FC net would be out to prove that their successes were no fluke. This is big stakes and the Santos boys would not want to pass up on a share of the half million dollars for the first prize.
The Guyana Defence Force will be relying on the astuteness of star striker, Stellon Davids. They will remember oh so well when he received a red card early in the tournament last year.
Back then, they had the services of Jerome Richardson who shored up the midfield position and Wesley Hall.
The army would once again field a lethal team with the aim of overturning their fortunes and carting off the stakes this time around.
Conquerors may want to enforce their name and ‘Conquer’ the soldiers. They have won this trophy on three previous occasions and may feel, rightfully so, that they own the accolade.
With players like Lester Peters, Jolyon Harry and Delon Williams in the midfield position, they would feel confident of hitting the jackpot. Add the competence of striker Jomo Hinds and Mustapha Haqq who alternates between the midfield and attacking positions and the situation becomes dicey.
Kick off time is 18:00hrs sharp. Don’t you dare miss it!
