– GVF promises good disciplined tournament
Beach Volleyball in Guyana received a significant boost yesterday when Aracari Resort undertook to sponsor next weekend’s Classic which will be played from June 5-August 3, at the entity’s location on the West Demerara.
The four-man round-robin tournament which will be contested among 16 teams was officially launched yesterday and in attendance were President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Lenox Shuffler, CEO of Aracari Resort and Roraima Trust & Investment Inc. Sase Shewnarain, co-ordinators of the event Ian Wills, Major Vernon Burnette, Commander of the GDF Coast Guard John Flores and a few players from the participating teams.
Speaking at the occasion Shewnarain, who resided overseas before returning to open the resort among other businesses, said that they saw the involvement in the competition as part of their corporate responsibility and they were proud to be on board.
“Our first thoughts after being approached was more in line with what goes on in the community here,” Shewnarain said.
He disclosed that because Goed Fortuin is part of the community and is traditionally regarded as a powerhouse in the sport locally in addition to a few members of the club currently being employed at the resort, which among other reasons swayed their decision to support the organisers.
The CEO indicated that because their mission is to help with the development of this country there was no hesitation in offering their support.
“When you watch the game, you are really watching a microcosm of leadership in the country.
You have leaders and many other components and it’s like looking and learning life’s lessons,” he stated.
Shewnarain pointed to the benefits of being involved in sports, adding that it teaches responsibility, good governance among others.
He said he would like to see the facility being fully utilised, while there must be an emergence of junior teams which will guarantee his endorsement for the use of the venue in the future.
Shuffler in his remarks was optimistic that next Saturday’s start of competition could help rekindle the fire that seemed to have been extinguished some time ago.
“Region 3 have a big cluster of volleyball players and it is also the home of the defending national champions (Achievers) and it must be seen as a plus to have the tournament played here,” he reasoned.
Shuffler revealed that the community has consistently demonstrated that it has been among the largest supporter of the sport.
He told Shewnarain that the two parties share the same vision and because of the commonality, the sport could witness some very exciting times ahead.
The GVF then expressed gratitude to the CEO and the co-ordinating team who according to him have both displayed admirable enthusiasm and passion for what they’re doing.
“When you merge the passion and finance the result will be obvious, it could only be success,” Shuffler said.
Wills, who is the tournament co-ordinator thanked Aracari for its support and promised a good disciplined event.
Wills mentioned that medals will be awarded to all the participating teams, while the winner will receive $100,000 plus a trophy; runner-up $75,000 plus a trophy; 3rd place-$50,000 and 4th place $25,000.
There will also be trophies for outstanding individual performances.
The sixteen teams will be placed in groups of four with the top teams moving on to the semi-final and then final.
