Consumers are being urged to be more vigilant and try to empower themselves when seeking to make purchases. This appeal comes even as the Ministry of Health through its Food and Drugs Department (FDA) has announced the removal of certain canned meat products that are distributed by Grace Food.
“We have asked for these things to be removed from shelves and Grace is cooperating by allowing us to know where they were distributed.”
Speaking to the media yesterday Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy noted that it would be an impossible task for the FDA to visit every shop and remove the recalled products from the shelves thus the need for collaboration on the part of consumers.
“Consumers should make themselves aware of what these products are and that is why we have published them because we want people to know and protect themselves. There is no guarantee we will get to all of the shops. I, as Minister of Health, am calling on all consumers to empower themselves; they must be able to read the labels and be proactive.”
It is for this reason, he said, that specific batch numbers have been unveiled to aid customers’ choice should they still have a preference for the recalled type of products.
The FDA earlier this week issued an alert following the recall of a quantity of Libby’s Corned Beef which is believed to have been contaminated with a drug used to control parasites in cattle.
According to a statement from the government department all consumers, retailers, distributors and importers should take note of the corned beef packaged by Grace Food, USA. The corned beef has production codes 100222 U, 1002119 U or 100224 U and were also stamped Brazil 337 SIF either on the bottom or top of the can.
“Also Grace 12 ounce corned beef can depicting Code 100204 or 100205 and marked Brazil Inspecionado 337SIF. Grace Corned Beef was packaged in Brazil and imported into the USA,” the release disclosed.
The brands of corned beef indicated were found to be contaminated with “Invermectin”- a drug used to control parasites in cattle.
The analyst department says that Invermectin can cause neurotoxicity symptoms, such as a lack of coordination or muscle movements. No illness has been reported so far as a result of the contaminated corn beef, it was assured.
