– retain Inter-Organisation B/ball title
In a combination of smothering defence and clinical offensive attacks, Guyana Power and Light (GPL) disconnected Neal & Massy Guyana Limited to retain the Inter-Organisation Basketball title at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The power company clipped both lines of Neal & Massy Wednesday night in the final of the Beepat Scorpions’ tournament to win 24-19 with their two engineers, Aubrey Younge and Lugard Mohan scoring 10 and 12 points respectively.
Frank Bell was the leading scorer for Neal & Massy with eight points as national forward Royston Siland was completely in darkness as a result of the disconnection. GPL made it two in a row in a tournament that is only three years old.
The power company’s toughest challenge came in their first game when they faced a well composed Media All-Star team, which they eventually beat 37-33 after the media starting guard, Aubrey Smith suffered a dislocated elbow in the first half.
It was always felt that the winner of that game would have gone on to win the tournament and that proved a reality when GPL also cut John Fernandes and Starr Computers on their way to the final. The power company won four straight games.
Conversely, Neal and Massy topped Laparkan Group of Companies 27-24 before moving on to challenge Giftland OfficeMax, a company that had secured Akeem ‘Dream’ Kanhai for a shot at the title in their first appearance in three years.
They did not get pass Neal and Massy, however, who went on to beat the ultra-strong and usually very competitive Barama team. It was clear, after the finalists emerged, that both of the teams were well deserving of topping the 20 teams.
Mohan used his superior ball-handling and distribution skills to support Younge’s scoring ability. It was a strategy that even surprised Siland, who was strategically kept out of that low-post zone that he favours more than most in the game.
A full-strength and uniformed GPL unit beat Neal and Massy with system and strategy.
It was obvious that they were the superior team and they recognised that from the first jump ball, and played with the confidence to support that idea.
Head Coach of the host club, Beepat Scorpions, Vijay Panday thanked the sponsors, fans and teams for supporting the event.
Ansa McAl, Beepat’s, Giftland, Shell Gas Station and Medicare Pharmacy were the primary sponsors of the event.
