SAFEWAY SECURITY sponsors development clinic
By Sean Devers
At a time when several off-the field incidents are undermining Guyana’s cricket development, the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Clinic for Spin bowlers and Batting against spin bowling commences tomorrow at the National Gymnasium from 09.30hrs. The activity is sponsored by SAFEWAY SECURITY.
The official launching of this clinic was held yesterday at SAFEWAY SECURITY’s office at 136 Albert Street, Alberttown and GCA President Roger Harper explained that this all-day clinic is much needed at a time when the art of spin bowling and batting against spin bowlers is on the decline among young Guyanese cricketers.
GCA Vice-President Neil Barry, who like Harper played at the First-Class level for Guyana, said that several developmental programs are being organized by the GCA since what happens on the field is often a reflection of what happens off the field.
Barry said that the players selected would have represented Georgetown at the youth level or as in the case of the senior players, participated for city clubs in first division cricket.
Harper’s elder brother Mark, also a former Guyana First-Class batsman, and GCA member and President of the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Lance Hinds were also present at yesterday’s launching of the clinic.
The clinic costs $126,000 to run-off and Managing Director of Safeway Security Eon Caesar said his company was pleased to be associated with the development of the City’s young cricket talent and assured the GCA that this will not be a one-off sponsorship but the beginning of a strong relationship with the governing body for cricket in the Capitol.
Harper encouraged the public to come out to witness the coaching session tomorrow and invited coaches not involved in the clinic to come and observe the day’s activity.
Cricketers invited to attend the clinic are asked to arrive at the Gymnasium by 09.00hrs and must be properly attired in Track Pants, White Cricket Shirt and Indoor cricket shoes (shoes without spikes). They must also walk with there complete cricket kit and an extra cricket shirt.
