The mother and older sister of 11-year-old Austin Lashley, who died in the wee hours of Wednesday, are out of hospital. His younger sister Ackenette remains hospitalised with head injuries.
The two drivers involved in the accident that claimed the life of Austin have been charged and are expected to appear in court today. It has been alleged that the driver of the car that transported the family had taken the Rupert Craig Highway route, where the collision occurred, to avoid the heavy traffic caused by the flag-raising ceremony that night.
According to the police report, motor car HB 8270, with the Austin family and the driver, was travelling east along the Rupert Craig Highway, while the other car, PLL 3541, was travelling west along the same highway when they both encountered flashing amber traffic lights and turned into Sheriff Street at the same time.
The resulting accident was fatal for Lashley, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
His sisters, 14-year-old Alana and eight-year-old Ackenette, as well as his mother, 35-year-old Pauletta Lashley were also injured. According to Pauletta’s sister-in-law, Shonette, the family had left home earlier that evening to attend the flag-raising ceremony at the National Park.
