But Police should be allowed to do their work
Says Sean Devers
On my return from Antigua where I covered the opening leg of the West Indies home series against South Africa I was greeted with the horrendous news of a Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Executive being doused by an unknown assailant with acid last Tuesday night.
Assistant Treasurer of the GCB Pretipaul Jaigobin remains a patient at the Burns Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital and the attack must be condemned.
However, people must be careful when publicly speculating reasons for the attack and those persons possibly behind the cowardly act, since without evidence and a proper Police investigation, the credibility of those named as suspects and the already shaky image of Guyana’s cricket could be damaged beyond repair.
Jaigobin must be commended for his courage to speak out against things which he feels are not in the best interest of Guyana’s cricket at GCB meetings but since he admits that he did not recognize his attacker, speculation could only make the job of the Guyana Police Force in bringing that person to justice more difficult and tarnish the image of honest and hard working members of the GCB since what comes across from the stories published in the dailies is that Jaigobin is being silenced by members of the GCB who did not want irregularities exposed. This is dangerous since without proof of the involvement of GCB officials such allegations could hurt Guyana’s cricket if sponsors were to withhold their support of the development of Guyana’s cricket because they fear being associated with a ‘bunch of rouges’ who run this country’s cricket which could affect their reputation as legitimate business entities.
Jaigobin has a right to name persons whom he suspects might have wanted to harm him but the national media must be responsible with their reporting on the issue and who might be the perpetrators before the Police complete their investigations since it could affect innocent officials and cricketers.
The Guyana Cricket Board has been divided into two factions that continue to fight for power instead focusing their attentions on improving Guyana’s cricket and this new episode is only making matters worse.
In a recent article I called on the Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony to sit with the two factions to try and pave a way forward or ask those not committed to the effort of reviving Guyana’s cricket to resign.
As the already strained relationship between members of the GCB worsen due to the unfortunate Jaigobin incident, I again call on Dr Anthony to intervene before the GCB self-destruct and kills the dreams of hundreds of talented young cricketers who aspire to one day play for their country and the West Indies.
