Three outstanding Under-19 players from the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club are vying for selection on the National Under-19 Team. The trio Dominique Rikhi, Lloydel Lewis and Shawn Pereira recently represented Berbice with great success following up to their outstanding performances over the past year for the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club which allowed the Club to win all the junior cricket tournaments in the ancient county in 2009.
Rikhi, the oldest of the trio at seventeen years old has captured the attention of the cricketing public with his solid batting, nimble footwork against both spin and pace and his ability to bat for long periods. He scored three half centuries during the 2010 Under-19 Inter-county Tournament and was named best batsman at the Three Day level.
Rikhi in 2009 led the Rose Hall Town Bakewell Under-17 Team to the Leslie Amsterdam Memorial Championship and led from the front with both bat and ball. He was in fact named Man of the Finals in that Tournament after scoring 40 and taking four wickets with his useful offspin. He currently plays for the Club at the Under-19, Under-23, Second Division and First Division level and is the captain of the
Under-19 Team and vice captain of the Under-23. He has scored a total of 2346 runs for the club at an average of over 40 with a top score of 100 not out versus No. 71 and has also scored seventeen half centuries.
Lewis captured 8 wickets for the county and scored vital runs during the recent GTM Tournament. One of the few young off spinners in Guyana who is not afraid to give the ball flight, Lewis is also a very capable middle order batsman and brilliant fieldsman. He captained the club’s Farfan & Mendes Under-15 Team to the Berbice Under-15 Championship and in the final against Tucber Park made 70 not out and took 4 for 22 with his off spin. He is currently the captain of Club’s Under-17 and vice captain of the Under-19 Team.
This year against the historic Port Mourant Cricket Club in a Guyana Cricket Board Three Day First Division match he took 9 wickets in the match and led Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club to victory within two days and also scored his maiden first division fifty – 60 not out versus Skeldon in a match where he also took eight wickets. He has scored a total of 1346 runs for the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club with seven half centuries and taken 163 wickets at an average of 11.00 with seventeen five wickets haul and four ten wickets match hauls.
Fourteen years old Shawn Pereira is the youngest of the trio and in 2010 successfully captained Berbice to the Under-15 Inter-county Championship. He also was praised for his outstanding leadership of the
National Under-15 Team which came close to clinching the Regional Title in Trinidad but lost to the host in the final and crucial round.
Pereira in the 2010 GTM Under-19 Tournament claimed 8 wickets and was quite impressive with his flight and turn which confused all of the batsmen. He claimed five wickets versus Demerara at the Police Sports Ground and was described by a sports journalist as a Shane Warne look a like. He is currently the captain of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Farfan & Mendes Under-15 Team and vice captain of the Bakewell Under-17 team.
Shawn also successfully led the Corentyne School Under-15 Team to the national championship and over the years has scored 1215 runs for the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club with a top score of 85 and has scored six half centuries. With the ball he has captured 179 wickets at an average of 11 with fourteen five wicket hauls.
The three young players are products of a multi-million dollar investment by the Rose hall Town Youth & Sports Club into developing new talents for the future. They have been members of the Club’s First Division Team for some years now with Rikhi making his debut at 14 years old, while both Lewis and Pereira made theirs at twelve years old.
The trio is currently involved in the Berbice Cricket Board Elite Training Programme and train twice daily at the area “H” ground under the watchful eyes of Rose Hall Town Cricket director Patrick Lewis and national player Assad Fudadin.
