An early morning accident claimed the life of 11-year-old Austin Ashley, and left his two sisters and mother injured.
According to the police report, shortly after midnight yesterday, motor car HB 8270, with the Austin family and the driver, was traveling east along the Rupert Craig Highway.
Motor car PLL 3541 was traveling in the same direction when they both encountered flashing amber traffic lights and turned into Sherriff Street at the same time.
The resulting accident was fatal for Lashley, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
His sisters, 14-year-old Alana and eight-year-old Ackenette, as well as his mother, 35-year-old Pauletta Lashley were injured. The three are in stable condition at the GPHC.
According to Pauletta’s sister-in-law, Shonette, the family had left home earlier that evening to attend the flag-raising ceremony at the National Park. She could not say why they were at the location where the accident occurred.
Another relative said that Pauletta had regained consciousness briefly at the hospital and asked for her children, She was told that Austin was dead, but seemed not to understand as she went back to sleep. It seemed that she was under the effect of the medication she was receiving at the time.
The children’s father who is separated from the mother and lives at Berbice, traveled to Georgetown on receiving news of the accident.
Both drivers have since been taken into police custody.
