Goodluck shoots ahead on opening day; conditions continues to pose challenges
Two hours of constant rain put a damper on the penultimate day of individual competition at the 2010 West Indies Fullbore Shooting Championships being contested at the Paragon Ranges, Christ Church, Barbados.
A mere half hour into the first detail at the 500 yards range, the heavens opened and the showers came down in all its glory sending the riflemen and women scattering back to their vehicles or to the Barbados Rifle association Club House which luckily, was a few meters away.
The rain did not relent for quite some time and when it finally did, a few who were shooting the first detail had to continue and the second detail took to the ranges soon after.
The time lost forced the organisers to cancel the 600 yards shoot as they moved straight to 900 yards.
Shooters will now have to contend with four ranges on the final day of the individual shoot today rather than three as some adjustments were made to the programme.
Competition today which commences at 09:00hrs will be at the 300, 600, 900 and 1000 yards ranges. The rounds at 300 have been reduced to 10 from 15 while at 600 it will be 10; 900 will be 7 and 10 at 1000. If rain is a challenge again today, the 600 range will be axed.
Acquiring the results from the organizers on a timely basis continues to be a nightmare. Competition concluded at about 17:15hrs and up to 19:00hrs last evening, the scores for the day were still not ready.
Mahendra Persaud, Captain of Guyanese team stated that he was still not satisfied with the level of work being done by the markers noting that they are taking too long to break and spot the shot on the targets. Persaud also stated that the conditions yesterday were not as challenging as the opening day – Tuesday – which saw his teammate and old buddy Ransford Goodluck in the top spot at the end of the day.
Three other Guyanese ended in the top 10 on day 1; Dylan Fields (4th), John Fraser (9th) and Persaud 10th. Ryan Sampson won the 500 yards range with a score of 49 complimented with 3 V’s while the most V’s by any shooter on the day was recorded by Veteran Richard ‘Dickie’ Fields who notched up 13.
Barbadian Louis king won at 300 yards (35-4) with Goodluck 2nd while another Barbadian, Capt. Karl Branch won the 600 shoot with a score of 72-6, Trinidadian Justin Lall one of the top contenders came 2nd (71-6) and Bermudian Sinclair Rayner 3rd (71-4).
Goodluck continues to show great form maintaining his form from Guyana which he also enjoyed at the Antigua & Barbuda Goodwill Shoot and now here in Barbados. He placed 4th and 5th respectively at 500 and 600.
Lt. Col. Terry Stuart (O’ Class) was 2nd to Sampson at 500 with Dylan Fields 6th and 4th at 600 while senior Fields (Richard) placed 4th at 600 with a score of 70-6.
