The final four of the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Competition has been decided and Fruta Conquerors and Santos has joined Riddim Squad and the Guyana Defence Force in the money round where all are assured of the prizes that are available.
However, all eyes will be fixed on the $500,000 first prize on offer and the Keith Smartt Lien Trophy.
Fruta Conquerors overcame BK International Western Tigers on penalties and Santos breezed by Seawall FC 3-0 in the final quarter-final games played last Sunday.
The focus is again set for the Georgetown Football Club ground from 6:00pm this Sunday when the semi-finals are played.
In the semi-finals Rhythm Squad open things against the GDF, while Fruta Conquerors tangle with and Santos in the main attraction. The four teams are battling for a berth in the final scheduled for Sunday June 6. The final will be preceded by the third place playoff.
It’s a do or die situation for all the teams and they will be pulling out all the stops to win. Riddim Squad has the Hope clan that will take the fight to their opposition. Sheldon, Sherwin, Sceyon and Steffon along with cousins Llyton and Amos Ramsay are the players that will spearhead Rhythm Squad. GDF on the other hand will be led by their main strike force Trevon Lythcott, Stellon David and Royan Morrison. The action should be fast and furious.
The nightcap will pit the skills of Conquerors’ Neville Stanton, Joslyn Harry, Eon Alleyne and Mustafa Haqq against that of Santos’ Shemroy Arthur, Dexter Arthur and William Europe and this promises football fans a treat.
At stake in the Sunday June 6 round is the first prize of $500,000, while $200,000 goes to the second placed finisher, third receives $100,000 and the fourth placed side collects $50,000.
Tournament Organizer Lennox Arthur has extended gratitude to the members of the corporate community that have assisted. Among them are Roshan Khan, DDL, Banks DIH, Digicel, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd, Giftland Office Max, Macorp, Courtney Benn and Nazar Mohammed of Mohammed’s Enterprise.
Two prizes for the Most Valuable Player were donated by Keishar’s and AH&L Kissoon Ltd, while Digicel will hand over a cell phone to the player scoring the most goals.
