Sarwan, Miller, Roach out due to injuries
By Sean Devers
Exciting 21-year-old Daren Bravo has finally been included in the West Indies ODI squad for the 3rd and 4th matches against South Africa in Dominica tomorrow and Sunday.
The Trinidad and Tobago left-hander who averages 39.01 from 7 ODI matches was not selected for the first two ODIs which the West Indies lost in Antigua.
Jamaican all-rounder David Bernard, who has played 3 Tests and 18 ODIs, missed the recent Jamaica senior team tour to the USA after being denied a US Visa and along with Bravo, the younger brother of Test player Dwayne Bravo, are the only ‘new players’ in the 13-man squad named yesterday.
Having failed to reach the semi-finals of the 20/20 World Cup, West Indies lost both 20/20 games of the Digicel home series along with the first two ODIs in Antigua and are desperately hoping for a reversal in fortunes following 5-nil whitewashes in their last two ODI series against South Africa in 2005 and 2008.
Added to their poor batting in Antigua, the Regional side has been hit by injuries to batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan (left hamstring strain), left-arm-spinner Nikita Miller (right side strain) and fast bowler Kemar Roach (left ankle soreness). They have all been ruled out for the rest of the ODI series.
Andre Fletcher’s horrendous recent run in West Indies colours with the bat has been put on hold after Dale Richards took his opening spot in the last match and the Grenadian has been dropped from the squad. Fletcher was used ahead of Denesh Ramdin to wicket keep in the 20/20 World Cup due to his batting ability but he never ‘fired’ and Ramdin returned as the Keeper even when he played as a specialist batsman.
There have been several calls for the inclusion of the younger Bravo, who if he remains focused and is handled properly, could develop into one of the Region’s next great batsman since the departure of Brian Lara.
The flamboyant Daren Bravo basically picked himself with a Man-of-the-Series performance in the recent ‘A’ team tri-nation series in Bangladesh, where he was the competition’s leading run-scorer with 309 runs including a hundred and 3 fifties in five innings.
West Indies squad:-Chris Gayle (Captain), Dwayne Bravo (Vice Captain), Sulieman Benn, David Bernard, Daren Bravo, Shiv Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Dale Richards, Darren Sammy, Jerome Taylor.
