Following reports of flooding in the Meadow Bank area Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall, visited the area to access the impact of the flooding.
During the visit it was pointed out to the Minister that the flooding is as a result of the outfall channel being silted up and fishing vessel being moored in the outfall channel.
Yesterday Deputy City Engineer Lloyd Alleyne and his crew were in the area clearing illegal structures. In an invited comment Alleyne said they were instructed by the Minister to remove the structures so that the silted channel can be cleared.
According to Alleyne, the Minister was under the impression that the structures were up legally but during the visit he found out otherwise.
“We were given instruction to remove the structures, because they are on the reserve.”
He added that works are being done at the Banks DIH koker but City Hall is waiting for the vessels that were moored at the other koker to move so that de-silting can start.
He further explained that there was some agreement between the proprietor of the Greater Georgetown Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Limited and the Minister to have the vessels removed by 14:00 hours yesterday.
However that was not done to facilitate work at the outfall channel. Alleyne said that he was not aware of what alternative was given to the owners of the vessel but they had promised a second time to have their vessel removed.
Up to late yesterday afternoon works at the Banks DIH koker were being carried out by a pontoon with two hymacs clearing that channel.
