Pomeroon farmers are very peeved because a $47M excavator that was detailed to clear the Aberdeen Canal of overgrown weeds has failed to execute its duties after encountering major problems.
The weed-choked canals should have been cleared this week.
The long boom excavator became submerged in salt water for weeks and became inoperable.
Experienced operators felt that no proper consultation was done as to determine the suitability of such a heavy duty machine to be sent in an area where they sub soil cannot sustain the weight.
Regional Councillor, Rudolph Garraway said that after the excavator sank work was ground to a halt.
Mr Garraway said that the weeds pose a further risk to farmers who are encountering flooding now that the rainy season has begun.
He is also a farmer and is calling for immediate intervention by the relevant authorities to alleviate the plight of farmers in the lower Pomeroon plight.
According to a source who said because inappropriate method to retrieve the machine failed, a contractor was paid a large sum of money and later place the equipment on a high dam. The machine has since been retrieved and repaired.
