Roger Gonsalves distinguished himself from among his colleagues at the intermediate level to cart off the honours when the Worldly Words Scrabble Club staged a tournament for players outside the top ten rankings of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Sunday afternoon last.
Carlton Murray suffered two losses to Kampta Ramnarine and Nicholas Grant but rebounded with decisive victories over Ruby Cummings (170), Roy Sharma (172) and Elton Chase (149) to close off the second podium spot with 4 games and a positive spread of 359.
Ruby Cummings finished in the third place after defeating Michael Benjamin (123), Chaitu (22), Sharma (253) and Grant (83). She dropped games to Murray (170) and Gonsalves (113).
Meanwhile, several of the top rated players organized an impromptu competition among themselves and Ulric Harris prevailed with 5 games and a positive spread of 267.
Orlando Michael finished second with 4 games and a positive spread of 287 while Julian Skeete closed off the podium spots with 2 games and a positive spread of 86. Altogether more than 20 competitors crowded into the venue which augured well for the future of the sport.
Organizer of the tournament and President of Worldly Words Scrabble Club, Nicholas Grant was satisfied by the attendance level.
He said that the tournament was organized with an aim of providing the players outside GASP top ten with a realistic chance of competing and winning the competition. He commended the high level of play even as he singled out Gonsalves for special praise. “Competitions such as these would serve as the catalysts to higher standards among the players,” he opined.
Several individuals and organizations were singled out for praise after responding to requests to sponsor the tournament in part. They are Ewart Adams, Carlton Murray Necessities Things for Life of Louisa Row, Werk-en-Rust, William Woolford, Telsteel Hardware Ltd, Gonsalves Works, Orlando Michael and Julian Skeete.
The players will convene this morning at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street to compete in the GASP Open tournament starting at 10:00hrs.
