NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Even in its current drab state, the town of New Amsterdam now has a handsome-looking structure at the entrance to the town centre, and that is a steel arch, blue in colour. It was constructed with the compliments of the ‘B’ Division Community Policing Group (CPG) in the Ancient County as part of its 34th Anniversary celebrations.
Community Policing Groups in Guyana were established in 1974.
Kaieteur News made contact with chairman of the ‘B’ Division CPGs, Mr Narine Chattergoon, who related that at a 34th Anniversary committee meeting, a decision was made to build an arch to enhance the appearance of the town of New Amsterdam.
The chairman said that the committee did not hesitate to execute the project, since there are arches in Rose Hall Town and Corriverton. He said that New Amsterdam, too, deserved its own arch, and the CPG in ‘B’ Division had made history by giving the town the first of its kind.
He related to this newspaper that the committee is hoping that the structure would be cared and maintained by the Mayor & Town Council and the business community. He said that he hopes that no entity or organization would misuse the arch to accommodate billboards and signs. The venture was made possible through donations by various business entities across Berbice, and Mr Chattergoon thanked them for their cooperation.
Kaieteur News spoke to a few residents of New Amsterdam, who after being told about the project, said that the magnificent structure would be welcoming visitors to a town which has virtually been run down and mismanaged by the authorities. Other residents made reference to just a few areas in which New Amsterdam “is going to the dogs”, including the garbage situation, poor roads, the ailing Town Council tower, and the old New Amsterdam Hospital, which is being dismantled by vagrants and vandals on a daily basis.
In a telephone interview with Town Clerk attached to the council, Mrs Angelina Collins, a correspondence was sent to the council by the CPG requesting permission to construct the arch, at which the council readily granted. She said that the town council has given its blessing and welcomed the gesture.
According to Mr Chattergoon, there will be a simple ceremony to celebrate the venture and its addition to the town’s façade on June 5.
