As the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association prepares boxers for the imminent Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in early July, several boxers will display their wares on the ProAm boxing card scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Friday evening.
The action gets underway at 20:00hrs when Troy Billy opposes Dexter Wray in a junior/flyweight bout, one bout before another junior/flyweight affair between Lared Stuart and Anthony George.
Devon Boatswain then opposes Dennis Thomas in the middleweight division. This bout would also serve as a box off for a place on the CAC Games in Puerto Rico. Both boxers have recognized the rewards of winning and each has promised an extra special performance.
The other junior/welterweight bout between Ray Sandiford and Nankumar Singh will also provide scorching entertainment. Both boxers are brawlers and one could only visualize the ensuing slugfest.
Nankumar has made quite a name for himself recently. He has won at the Red Ground, Timerhi when the GABA in collaboration with the Timerhi Warriors had staged a card there on Easter Monday.
The stocky Republican boxer followed up that victory with two masterful displays in the just concluded novices boxing championships. He was subsequently adjudged best boxer. In the last ProAm he disposed of GDF representative, Clairmont Gibson to retain his unbeaten record at these championships.
How well he would fare against Sandiford will be known on Friday night. A former pugilist of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Sandiford has switched camp to the Police Gym and has professed to be more comfortable in that gym.
A vicious two fisted warrior he would be out to end Nankumar’s winning streak. A great battle is envisioned between the two.
Meanwhile, the boxers identified for possible selection to the CAC Games would be encamped within the next week as the coaches intensify their preparations.
