Mason granted $150,000 bail on bodily harm charge

Twenty-five year-old Alfred Bradshaw of Princes Street, Lodge, was yesterday placed on $150,000 bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that Bradshaw, on May 19 unlawfully and maliciously wounded Martin Andrews with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm. He was not required to plead to the offence since it was indictable.
Attorney at law Sase Gunraj who represented Bradshaw said that his client is gainfully employed as a mason/carpenter.
The lawyer further told the court that the entire incident stemmed from someone vandalizing a minibus, which is owned by his mother.
Gunraj said that several items were stolen from the bus and his client went scouring the area in an effort to locate them. He noted that one of the minibus’s light was found in an alleyway near his home.
The lawyer explained that his client kept a close watch at the location where the light was found.
Lo and behold, the lawyer said, Andrews went to the alleyway to search for the items.
The lawyer argued that it was Andrews who began attacking his client with a weapon. He said that it was the same weapon that inflicted the injuries on Andrews.
“My worship my client was acting in self defence,” stressed the lawyer. He further stated that Bradshaw was not a flight risk, nor did he have a criminal background.
The lawyer asked that bail be set in a reasonable sum for his client.
The virtual complainant, who was present in court, however gave a different version of events. Andrews told the magistrate that he was coming from work when Bradshaw attacked him.
The man said that the defendant chopped him about his body and he had to seek refuge in his house to avoid further injuries.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford, did not oppose bail. The prosecutor also asked that both parties refrain from saying anything to each other.
Bail was set at $150,000 and Bradshaw was ordered to return to court on June 25.
