– more than 25 teams stand in their way
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) will look to retain its Beepat Scorpions’ Inter-Organisation Basketball title today when the third annual competition bounces off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 9:30am.
Former national players, Lugard Mohan and Aubrey Younge will spearhead the power company today in the one-day tournament that has attracted more than 25 teams in one of the biggest interest shown since its 2008 inauguration.
The tournament aims at targeting players within those organisations, who do not often get opportunities to play basketball outside work hours. Initially, the club had also set out the competition as a family day out for employed ‘ball’ players.
The media is expected to field a very strong team in this year’s competition. The players are asked to reach at the Sports Hall at 9am to ensure that they are registered on the team for the mega inter-organisation basketball battle.
The media team includes: Edison Jefford (Kaieteur News); Yannick December (Capitol News); Rawle Toney (Guyana Chronicle); Floyd Christie (Stabroek News); Rueben Stoby (NCN); Kiev Chesney (Guyana Times); Aubrey Smith and Kester Gomes (EC Guyana). Other interested players are asked to meet at the Sports Hall for 9am to ensure that their names are on the registration form.
Other registered teams includes, Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Service, Scotia Bank, Republic Bank, Bank of Guyana, Neil and Massey Group, Banks DIH, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Guyana and Trinidad Mutual, Medicare, National Insurance Scheme, Digicel, Star Computers, Giftland OfficeMax, Laparkan Group of Companies, CARICOM, Barama and John Fernandes Limited.
Head Coach of Scorpions, Vijay Panday informed that Ansa McAl, Beepat’s, Giftland, Shell Gas Station, Dyna’s Embroidery and Medicare Pharmacy are the main sponsors of the event.
