Sherwin Benjamin, the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM) member who assaulted an elderly woman at the People’s National Congress Reform’s recently concluded Regional Conference has been suspended. The incident has since been reported to the Police and criminal action would be pursued.
Benjamin has been suspended pending the investigation and its determination when a final decision will be made.
The party in a statement to the media said that whatever may be the alleged reasons for the assault, the PNCR considers the behaviour as “totally unacceptable and inexcusable”.
This newspaper was informed that the woman had made a derogatory remark regarding the sexuality of one of Dr Richard Van West Charles’s supporters and it was that remark which angered Benjamin, who resorted to attacking the woman.
The General Secretary of the Party, Oscar Clarke, who was present, promptly called on members of the gathering who witnessed the incident, to submit written statements about what transpired, so that party investigations could begin forthwith. The party has also promised that the Disciplinary Committee of the Party would expeditiously deal with this matter.
Corbin in addressing the conference before its conclusion had denounced the incident as shameful, unacceptable, “and contrary to the well-known policy of the Party of being totally and inexcusably against any form of violence and abuse against women in society.”
This newspaper understands that as the participants of the conference were gearing to vote there was a flurry of heckling and the woman hurled an unsavoury remark towards a doctor who is also a close supporter of the Dr Richard Van West Charles faction. This angered another supporter of Dr Van West Charles, who punched the woman.
The assailant was forced to flee the congress after several angry participants pursued him. He managed to make good his escape in a vehicle.
