– Police called on to investigate China Trading
Ministry of Labour Officials on Monday rescued a 14-year-old Amerindian boy who was allegedly hidden away by his Chinese employers at their farm at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara.
Additionally, the employers were made to pay the teenager $97,000 for six weeks’ work. This amount included overtime and Sunday payments, for work of manual labour done between the hours of 07.00 hrs and midnight each day.
China Trading, a Robb Street business, under investigation by the Ministry of Labour, was additionally made to pay thousands of dollars more owed in overtime to two other Amerindian men who had come forward to report about irregularities taking place within the company.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs in a release yesterday, welcomed the initiative by the Labour Ministry to investigate the allegations of misconduct by China Trading of a number of Amerindians.
Kaieteur News understands that the 14-year-old was left behind when his 24-year-old brother, Vernon John, left the company’s employ last Friday.
The teenager and four other Amerindian co-workers were asleep when they were woken up early Monday morning by their employers. The teen and two others were informed by their “boss lady” that “you have to go to the farm (Garden of Eden).”
They were whisked away to the East Bank Demerara location in a minibus owned by the company.
Labour officials, acting on information, went to the Garden of Eden farm and located the teenager. He is now re-united with a relative who had asked for the Ministry’s assistance.
Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday, in the presence of his adult relative, the teenager said that he had been working with the company for six weeks. He was recruited at Lethem by a Chinese businessman who is said to be a “friend” of China Trading.
His recruiter was fully aware that he was only 14-years-old.
This newspaper had been reliably informed that the sex games reported in an earlier story took place last year. This was in July when two teenagers from Lethem were employed with the company.
The elder of the teenagers confirmed reports received by KN that their employers and other Chinese workers, would ply them with liquor before telling them to have sex with two teenaged Amerindian girls who were staying at the bond at that time.
The teenager also confirmed that the Chinese nationals would take turns having sex with the girls. He also said that the men had sex with his 13-year-old brother. The two are now back at home, and the younger teen is back in school, where he is reportedly doing well.
The Home Affairs Ministry has expressed specific concerns about these allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse by the Chinese nationals committed against Amerindian girls and boys during their employ at China Trading.
The Ministry has called upon the Guyana Police Force “to investigate these allegations in the context of the Sexual Offences Act recently assented to by His Excellency the President.”
That Act however, although it has been assented to by the President, does not become law until after its publication in the Official Gazette. This has not yet been done.
