Cricket Development in the ancient county of Berbice took another giant step when the Special Events Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board unveiling plans for the formation of a Berbice ‘A’ Team and an elite training programme for 30 junior cricketers. Chairman of Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster made the announcement at the launching of the senior elite training programme last Sunday at the Albion Community Centre Cricket Ground.
The Berbice ‘A’ Team, Mr. Foster stated would be structured along the lines of the West Indies ‘A’ Team and would be a development team for the county. The Team would consist of players on the verge of making the Berbice Senior Team and would serve as a grooming tool for the players. Outstanding performance for the Berbice ‘A’ Team could lead to promotion to the senior side and it is the hope of the Berbice Cricket Board to put pressure on members of the senior team to perform or face the axe.
Mr. Foster stated that tours to Demerara and Essequibo would be organised for the ‘A’ Team to play clubs from the two counties. A cap system would also be introduced for the team and special training sessions would be organised. With the introduction of the Berbice ‘A’ Team, the Berbice Cricket Board is confident that the county players would be inspired to perform better especially the Under-19 players.
The Board also announced that an elite training programme for junior players would also be held during the rainy season. Mr. Foster stated that the Berbice Cricket Board at the moment is conducting a series of coaching sessions and has already completed three sessions for wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and spinners. On Saturday May 20 the final session was held for 30 young batsmen and then a squad of 30 players would be selected for the junior elite training programme that would be conducted alongside the one for seniors and would last for the entire rainy season.
Mr. Foster called on all young players in Berbice to take advantage of the massive investment the Berbice Cricket Board is making on their future and to dedicate themselves to the game.
Meanwhile, the Berbice Cricket Board on Saturday last held another successful coaching session for junior cricketers at the Albion Cricket Ground. A total of 20 young fast bowlers attended the fast bowling clinic that was conducted by senior cricket coach Winston smith and Guyana and West Indies ‘A’ fast bowler Brandon Bess.
The day long clinic saw the players involved in several sessions on fast bowlers’ run up, bowling rhythms; follow through, importance of length and line, physical fitness among others. Among the players at the camp were Clinton Pestano, Raun Johnson, Keon Joseph, Shailendra Hardyal, Jamal Jarvis, George Hughes and Nial Smith. Female players Nermala Sewdat, Tremayne Smartt and Erva Giddings also attended the clinic.
Coach Smith at the end of the clinic urged the young fast bowlers to work harder at their games and to put into practice what they have learnt. The coach urged the young players to work hard as most of the pitches were unsuitable for their trade and as such they would have to work harder than spinners for success.
Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board special Events Committee Hilbert Foster stated that there was a severe shortage of young fast bowlers in the county and the Board was determined to correct the situation. More coaching sessions would be organised for the fast bowlers while the most promising ones would be selected to be part of the Board’s Elite Junior Coaching Programme to be launched soon.
The final clinic for young cricketers would be held on Saturday May 29 for batsmen at the Albion Community Centre Cricket Ground.
