May 25, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
I wish to let it be known that there is a voice behind the veil, with reference to the article published in the 7th May, 2010 edition of the Kaieteur News and captioned, “should the Muslim veil be banned in Guyana?”
I am utterly aghast and astonished at these men. French President “Sarkozy feels it is dehumanizing to a woman”. Mr. Kissoon’s opinion is that the veil, which myself and many other women the world over freely choose to wear, is an “aesthetically hideous instrument” and further ridiculed it by calling it an “appendage” and “awkward facial make-up”.
Mr. Kissoon claims that Muslims are chauvinistic but who can be chauvinistic that men who don’t consult us, the women behind the veil to know what are our thoughts? Who can be more chauvinistic than men who seek to enact laws to violate what we hold sacred to us? Who can be more chauvinistic than men who seek to prevent us from going to schools and universities if we do not subscribe to their whims and fancies by taking off our veil?
Mr. Kissoon uses the illegality of transsexuals wearing women’s clothing and the removing of stickers from vehicles as his premise for the banning of the niqab (veil). What an outlandish comparison to say the least. These two things were outlawed on moral grounds thus the niqab cannot be placed alongside them.
The security issue, Mr. Kissoon negates this argument himself by acknowledging diplomatic vehicles are an exception to the rule of tint. The same way someone can don the niqab to commit an illegal act so too someone can drive around in a heavily tinted car looking like a diplomat and commit a number of illegal acts. Bandits use guns and cars, should we ban all, including the police from having guns and the entire populace from having cars? The points put forward for such a ban fail miserably in the face of scrutiny.
As for Mr. Kissoon’s assertions; firstly, that he will never subscribe to gender separation then I say to him if one doesn’t subscribe to the rules of UG he can’t teach there, if one doesn’t subscribe to the rules of a press conference he can’t attend and so forth. Secondly, Islamic scholars should be able to contextualize the edict of the veil or any other edict of the Quran is a stroll into the dark. A little research should reveal the reality.
Whatever country one lives in they must adhere to the law even if they don’t comprehend the wisdom of it and if they don’t, they’ll be penalized. Islam means submission and we as Muslims firmly believe that the Quran was revealed from the Creator of the prophet Muhammad (saw) and we submit wholeheartedly to it and its tenets since the creator knows best his creation
