Seawall FC surrender meekly to Santos
Football fans endured several postponements of the two-quarter finals matches in the Mayor’s Cup Football Competition and when the rains subsided and play was possible, the two matches compensated for the long wait.
Selected by the pundits to win the championships, Kashif and Shanghai champions BK International Western Tigers suffered a shock defeat to Fruta Conquerors FC on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time ended on 2-2.
Captain of Western Tigers Sherman David netted in the 17th minute while Nedd Fraser pasted the opposition’s goalie in the 43rd. The reigning K&S champions seemed set to advance to the other stage and secure another major title when Eon Alleyne shattered their dreams with a scorcher in the 89th minute. The Tigers were still reeling from that blow when Alleyne struck again merely one minute after the first success sending the Conquerors’ fans into jubilation. The final whistle meant that the eventual winners had completed half of the job.
A furious battle ensued in overtime and though several opportunities from both sides went abegging, the scoreline remained the same forcing a penalty showdown. Even then, the battle was intense as the final score of 3-2 underlined.
Seawall FC surrendered meekly to Santos FC 3-0 on the backs of goals from William Europe (25th), Glenovan Edmonds (57th and 85th). However, the Seawall team can feel comforted after competing against Topp XX in the National League competition in the Mining Town. Reports are that the match was a thrilling encounter and eventually ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Seawall FC returned to Georgetown several hours after the conclusion of that match but were obviously still a bit tired. They put up a spirited performance in the first half but dwindled away in the second.
The tournament enters the semi-final stage on Sunday with Rhythm Squad playing the Guyana Defence Force in the supporting match to Conquerors FC and Santos FC in the main attraction. The four teams are battling for a berth in the final scheduled for Sunday June 6.
Meanwhile, the organizer, Lennox Arthur is heartened by the high level of play witnessed in the tournament. “Most of the teams touted to win have been booted out of the tournament which underlines the serious approach of the smaller teams to their games,” he said.
Arthur also bemoaned the ill luck experienced because of the inclement weather but feels that provided the weather holds the remaining matches should provide the high level of competition witnessed throughout the tournament.
