Kaieteur News vehemently condemns the odious attack that occurred last night on our daily columnist, Mr. Frederick Kissoon.
Faecal matter was thrown into Kissoon’s face as he left a popular supermarket. We consider this assault on the person of Mr. Kissoon an attack on free speech.
It is our opinion that this was a premeditated act aimed at silencing Mr Kissoon and by extension, this newspaper, for the columnist’s outspoken views on political and social concerns within our society.
We wish to make it emphatically clear to those who wish to close down this newspaper that such actions will not scare us into submission. As abhorrent and indecent as this most recent attack was, it will not force us into silence.
We stand in support of Mr Kissoon and his right to express his views within his column, however discomforting this may be to some people.
This is not the first time that Freddie has come under attack, but this most unsavory incident is a reminder of the fragility of press freedom and the price that often has to be paid for the exercise and defence of this right.
Whatever differences of opinion persons may have with Freddie, he is entitled to his opinions and to expose what he sees as wrong within this society. The attack on him constitutes a deeper descent into intolerance.
We deplore this and call on the authorities to act swiftly to bring the perpetrator and the intellectual authors behind this most terrifying assault to justice.
