Guyanese to chase glory as individual competition starts
Months of intense and challenging preparation will be highlighted when competition in the 2010 West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council/Caribbean Championships shoots off today at the Paragon Ranges, Christ Church, Barbados.
Yesterday, under the watchful eyes of Coaches ACP Paul Slowe, Ransford Goodluck, Mahendra Persaud and Dylan Fields, the Guyanese 14-man team enjoyed at full day of practice at the 300, 600 and 900 Yards Ranges as they sought to get familiar with the Range and the wind.
According to Head Coach Paul Slowe, “There were strong, predominant right winds throughout the day and our guys had to grip their rifles very strong too.”
Slowe, a veteran shooter who is no stranger at the Paragon Ranges having commenced his Regional career at this very Range back in 1978 summed up the day as very good for the team.
“Things went very well – the intention was for us to ensure that we get our zeros at the various ranges especially at 300 and 900 yards – I think the 600 practice was a plus and we did exceedingly well. All the shooters were able to establish their zeros which achieved the aim for the day’s exercise.”
Slowe said he was very pleased to see the overseas team members (Sigmund Douglas, John Fraser, Derrick Narine and Paul Archer) being able to establish their zeros (getting the correct elevation in order to hit the target) at the various ranges.
“I think this augurs very well, not only for the individual shoot but especially the team matches on Saturday and Sunday, so all in all things went very well.”
Slowe however, did point out that the marking (persons scoring on the actual target mechanisms) did not go the way they anticipated but they are hoping that the organizers can sort the issue ahead of competition today and the rest of the week.
“It can be a real humbug if you don’t have good marking, we will meet later on in the evening (last night) and bring our concern to the organisers about some of the deficiencies that we would have observed.”
Team spirit among the Guyanese team is very high with everyone helping each other as they seek to maintain their collective dominance in the sport at the Regional level.
Despite competition being at the individual level over the next three days, Slowe noted that the coaches will still be there to offer guidance to the shooters.
Team Captain Mahendra Persaud also said the day went well and he is looking forward to the ensuing days. Persaud, who started competing back in 1994, noted that he is looking forward to some good performances from the team members.
Competition gets underway from 09:00hrs.
