Last night about 19.15 hours, outside the Jiffy Lubes store on North Road and Light Street, a man came up to my car and threw a container of miasmic mess on my face and onto my stomach. It appeared to me to be feces mixed with fresh cow dung.
I had left the University after teaching and was going to Kaieteur News when I made a stop at Nigel’s Supermarket to buy channa for my daughter who asked me to bring it when I was coming home.
There was no space outside Nigel’s so I parked next door to Jiffy Lubes. I bought my stuff and as soon as I sat in the car, and put the window down, this meaty guy came up to the window and threw the offensive stuff on me.
He ran west on North Road. I couldn’t immediately drive after him because I was temporarily blinded. However, I caught up with him but he swung into Merriman Mall where a white AT 192 Carina was waiting with other occupants.
I drove to the car but it was coming at me. I swerved out of its path and it sped and swung slightly away. All I noticed that it was PKK but I couldn’t make out the numbers. I thought of driving behind them but they sped away with ferocious speed.
So what is the analysis? There is no analysis. Life goes on. I will continue to write. I was attacked in April of 2004, outside my garage, beaten with a gun and my car stolen. The car was found literally yards away from Kaieteur News.
Nothing was stolen even though I had my “light bill” money in the car. I knew, then, that state agents (not official security personnel) had done their job and the message was to scare me.
I believe it is the same here. They cannot kill me because I think they are uncertain how it will play out. Could it bring down the Americans on them? They do not want to take that chance.
Will they come again? What can I do? Almost daily I get warnings from people to be careful. These sympathetic outpourings come from all types. I am not going to hide. I am not going to hire bodyguards. I cannot afford that.
I am not going to apply for a firearm. I don’t like guns. If I have a gun, I will shoot people because I see a lot of wrong things in my life. This is a short article. I resume my normal column tomorrow and the fight for my country. I will not become afraid. I love my country. I hate dictatorship. I will fight dictatorship.
