Dear Editor,
Columnist, Freddie Kissoon has been resolute and unwavering in his view that ‘Dr. Champion’, despite all of the latter’s mutterings to the contrary, wants a third term as president of Guyana.
I am now convinced that Freddie is right.
All these parties and billboards, including the massive electronic one now under construction at Bourda Market near the coconut vendors at the corner of North Road and Orange Walk, are not simply manifestations of narcissistic adoration by ‘Dr. Champion’s’ sycophants led by the real McKoy and electronically energized by the corpulent but squeaky Brassington.
These things cost money and big money at that. Whether this money is coming from the lotto funds deposited at the Office of the President or some secret account at the Central Bank or from the sycophants themselves is a question perhaps only Christopher Ram may be able to answer.
One thing is for sure, the kind of money being spent on this obscene promotion of ‘Dr. Champion’, cannot be simply relegated to the machinations of a few over zealous sycophants. There is a much bigger prize – a third term for ‘Dr. Champion’.
The goal is to promote ‘Dr. Champion’ as the only viable presidential candidate for the PPP in the 2011 general elections. Poor old Donald, Ralph, Moses and the fella that goat did not bite can do nothing but standby and see all their presidential aspirations disappearing as ‘Dr. Champion’s’ relentless third term juggernaut crushes them.
But how does ‘Dr. Champion’ get past the constitutional hurdle that limits him to only two terms?
Well all that has been worked out. Despite the fact that ‘Bertie’ Corbin has indicated that he will not be the PNC’s presidential candidate for the 2011 general elections, no serious Guyanese observer can visualize ‘Bertie’ going quietly into the night.
After all what will he do? So, an agreement has been reached between ‘Dr. Champion’ and ‘Bertie’. As I see it, ‘Dr. Champion’ has shown ‘Bertie’ a carrot called “shared governance”. The arrangement is that ‘Bertie’ will facilitate ‘Dr. Champion’ with the 2/3 majority in Parliament required to amend the constitution to allow for a third term for ‘Dr. Champion’.
When the Indians elect ‘Dr. Champion’, ‘Bertie’ will be brought into government under the banner of shared governance and both will be seen as saviours of the nation. ‘Bertie’ has no doubt that ‘Dr. Champion’ is a man of his word.
In the same way that ‘Dr. Champion’ has emasculated the PPP’s executive council, ‘Bertie’ has filled the PNC’s parliamentary benches with persons loyal to him with about four inconsequential exceptions. So in the great traditions of democratic centralism the road to ‘Dr. Champion’s’ third term has been paved by a few who purport to speak for many.
And in the result, Guyana will continue to wallow in the cesspool of corruption and underdevelopment, which is the true legacy of ‘Dr. Champion’.
