Independent Phantom killings probe…
– Ramjattan
“Here again is a most ridiculous response by an agent of the Peoples Progressive Party Government…It borders on the obscene.”
This is according to Chairman of the Alliance for Change Khemraj Ramjattan who was at the time responding to statements made by Presidential Advisor Gail Teixeira following calls for an independent investigation into the ‘Phantom Squad” killings.
Teixeira had told media operatives that the government will only call an independent commission of inquiry into the allegations if evidence is provided.
Ramjattan said that the Government found independents to constitute inquiries in the past, “but cannot find independents today to constitute an Inquiry into the Phantom Squad…How hypocritical.”
Ramjattan posited that the Government does not want an investigation because it will reveal that a number “of senior Government officials were the intellectual authors of that gang and its activities…That a few were involved with direct day to day communication with leaders of that gang is such a notorious fact.”
He said that for a Presidential Advisor on Governance to come up with the suggestion that no one will be independent, “starkly reveals the incompetence in high levels and how she, and the Government she speaks for, view Guyanese as a whole.”
He questioned whether one has to be a complete PPP loyalist or a sycophant to be an independent.
“Frankly, it does not want the truth…But it is only the truth which will set us free.”
Ramjattan asked why the Government could not recommend a CARICOM or wider international team, “They too will not be independents?”
As it relates to Teixeira assertion that because there is no information as such there will be no probe, he remarked that “this is so illogical.”
According to Ramjattan, there is sufficient evidence to call for a probe.
“It certainly is what may have grounded the calls by the Canadians, British and Swiss officials in Geneva recently, and the whole of Guyana for years now.”
He stated that when the Commission of Inquiry gets going, then the information will be forthcoming.
“So is she saying the information has to come before the Commission is set up to probe?…Gail is deliberately putting the cart before the horse, so that Guyanese will never get an official truthful version of what happened.”
“Overseas countries interested in this issue should take away all those visas of Ministers who don’t want a probe.”
