An inspiring story on overcoming odds
At age 71, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perriera is as vibrant as ever and has not lost any of his passion for Sports.
The Guyanese-born International Cricket Commentator and Sports Administrator recently launched his autobiography titled ‘Living my Dreams’ in his adopted homeland St Lucia during the Semi-final phase of the ICC 20/20 World Cup tournament.
The Barbados launching of the book was done on May 12 while the Antigua launching was set for yesterday.
Reds told Kaieteur Sport that his book (which looks at his early life growing up in Pomeroon, his migration to Georgetown, his involvement in sports and later cricket commentary, his stroke in Australia and his parting of ways with the CMC will be launched in his native Guyana on June 24 at the Pegasus Hotel.
The affable veteran broadcaster, who on several occasions paired with the Caribbean’s leading Cricket broadcaster and Cricket writer Barbadian Tony Cozier to cover tours outside of the Region for Radio, informed that when he turned 70 on May 20 last year, he decided to do a book.
“I was encouraged to do a book by Guyanese writer and old friend Ian McDonald and I got it started last year July,” Reds disclosed.
Reds explained how he overcame a terrible stutter to become one of the most recognised voices in the West Indies and how he would lie in bed as a teenager and do imaginary commentary on Test matches from Lords, Championship Boxing from Madison Square Garden or epic World Cup Football matches between Brazil and England.
Perriera, a former Sports advisor to an Ex-Guyana Sports Minister, now lives in St Lucia after spending periods of his life in England, Suriname and Barbados.
The Guyanese Broadcaster thanked United Insurance, the Pegasus in Guyana, Laparkan, John Fernandes, and Guy Enterprise for their support of his book and its launch in Guyana. (Sean Devers)
