Up to this moment, it is the words of Peter Ramsaroop versus the story of Nicole Ming. No charges have been laid against Ramsaroop. Ming is saying one thing, Ramsaroop is contending the opposite. We all know what the exchanges are. A few reminders will suffice. Ming says there were “peeping” cameras in her rented apartment. Ramsaroop says they were inactive with wires long disconnected. Ramsaroop explained she was asked to move and she is getting back at him. Ming argues that her notice came after she went public.
So far, this is the back and forth story. The commentators and political pundits however will focus on Ming because she called a press conference and her emanations have raised the curiosity of media personnel. I can only speak for myself. I find some areas of intrigue in Ms. Ming’s delivery. Let’s get sociology out of the way. There are always exceptions to the rule in every form of behaviour but in the social sciences we look for trends and patterns. In Guyana, the pattern is to find 19-year-old girls still living with their parents. Sociologists would go further and say that this attitude is more pronounced among East Indian girls.
I don’t want to dwell further on this aspect of Ms. Ming’s culture except to say she is one in a million when it comes to that behavioural pattern. There is a question however. Ms. Ming admitted in her press briefing that she couldn’t go out often with Ramsaroop’s girlfriend because her mother would not allow it. Then shortly after, she moved into her own apartment. Seem that Ms. Ming went from the cloistered to the carefree in quick time. I hope Ms. Ming reads this because I need to talk to her about this aspect of her press appearance. Some reports I got from sources that are not subjective and not given to rumours put Ms. Ming at several minglements in recent months.
Ms. Ming is photographed with a garland during the rodeo she attended. There are two things to note about garlanding. One is that the arrangement is always made by the official hosts. I doubt that at a function, a private person would carry a garland and put it around the neck of the guest. I assume therefore that Ms. Ming was decorated by the people who were in charge of the rodeo show. This brings me to the second aspect. For her to receive the ring of flowers, she had to be part of the entourage of some very important people, in this case the presidential train. Against this backdrop, Ms. Ming ought to know that the media will want to scrutinize all angles of her allegation because it is being made against a prominent opposition personality by a close friend of the President. I must say though that given Mr. Jagdeo’s age and that of Ms. Ming, the President does have young friends. I think Mr. Jagdeo would be about twenty seven years senior to Ms. Ming.
Reading the outpouring of Ms. Ming, some curiosities and grey areas stare at you. Why would someone make a police complaint against a prominent citizen, have the police investigate him then demand that she would not face the camera and does not want the media recording to be broadcasted? Is there something to hide? And why should the media be accommodating; in such cases the world over, the media is not. One hopes that the media keeps up its intensity on both sides – probing who is really Nicole Ming and who is really Peter Ramsaroop. Then there is the flashing red light. I find Ming’s reaction unreal. You see a peculiar instrument in your apartment and you chose not to raise it with the landlord or his girlfriend that you know well? Seems strange! Then you got so enraged when you come to the conclusion that you were being taped that you took the drastic action of calling in the police at a time when you were still a friend with the landlord’s common-law wife. Again, this is unusual.
So where do we go from here? A comical and farcical dimension has entered the picture. The Commissioner of Police told the media that the police released Ming’s complaint/statement to satisfy the public. I must be living on Planet Mars. Since when do the police release documentations of a criminal investigation to please the public? Secondly, how can the Police Commissioner admit that the police didn’t reply to Ramsaroop’s request to travel? Where is his apology?
