Essequibo River boat sinking…
Two days after a boat sank in the Essequibo River close to the Transport and Harbours Department Stelling, Bartica, the ferry service is back in operation.
Yesterday, the MV Makouria docked at the stelling. The ferry was scheduled to dock in Bartica since Saturday but could not do so because of the sinking of a smaller boat last Friday.
Early Saturday, public spirited citizens as well as workers from the Transport and Harbours Department tried to remove the sunken boat from the location.
However, it was only until yesterday morning that persons managed to get the boat out of the way for the ferry to dock. The sunken vessel, however, up to press time yesterday, still remained under water but out of the way of the ferry. Up to late yesterday, two barges were trying to get the sunken vessel out of the water but this was unsuccessful. Later today, workers are expected to continue efforts to remove the sunken vessel as it poses a serious threat to other boats plying the area.
About 10:00hrs Friday at the Bartica Transport and Harbours Department Stelling, the MV Phyllis, owned by Ryan Mahadeo and his brother Reuben Mahadeo, was carrying goods for the Ryan and Reuben General Store, on First Avenue, Bartica.
It was laden with goods and other merchandise. There were 15 slings of cement, a quantity of rice and sugar, and hardware. The captain of the vessel was Zanny Mahadeo.
Sources reported that by the time the boat reached the stelling it was fast being filled with water. Luckily, residents and boat operators were on hand and averted an even greater disaster that could have resulted in the loss of at least two lives.
