The Guyana Squash Association has named a 14 member team to represent Guyana at the Caribbean championships in the Cayman Islands scheduled for July of this year. The team includes a fresh batch of under-13 players as all of the previous nationals have moved up in age group.
The girls team will once again be overwhelming favourites to bring home the team title, with the core of the team that has dominated the rest of the Caribbean over the past four years still very much in tact. The team features four former individual champions in, Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung-A-Fat, Ashley Khalil and Keisha Jeffrey.
This group of remarkable young ladies have won a total of 10 Caribbean individual titles between them. They will be ably supported by Kayla Jeffrey who has been an equally important part to the team’s great success over the past few years. Taylor Fernandes and Larissa Wiltshire are the two debutants in the under-13, although they did compete in the individual category last year in Barbados.
The boys team has surprised the critics in both of the past two years by winning the team title without featuring a single individual champion. They will be led by the only player on the team to have won an individual title in two time former champion Alex Arjoon. His supporting cast of Deje Dias, Jason Ray Khalil and Nyron Joseph are all well experienced and have played important parts in the team’s success over the past two years.
The team will be further strengthened by the inclusion of overseas based Jean-Claude Jeffrey who has had an outstanding year competing on the Canadian junior circuit. Under-13 players Ben Mekdeci and Patrick Fraser are the two fresh faces on the team having never experienced any type of Caribbean competition before.
The team will be coached by national coach Carl Ince who has been the inspiration behind the team’s unprecedented success since he took over in 1998.
Due to the logistics and financial commitment required to get the team to the Cayman Islands the selectors decided to choose the team earlier than normal this year. They have also named six standby players who will be required to continue training with the squad and may be called up in the event any team member is unable to compete due to injury. These players are also eligible to compete in the individual championships of the tournament.
