Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, said that despite the fight by all law enforcement agencies, locally and overseas, Guyana continues to be a main transshipment point for drugs destined to North America. Greene was at the time responding to recent comments by Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, about a major crack in a drug ring following an arrest at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
According to the Commissioner, the Minister’s comment may not have been related to the general drug situation in Guyana.
“There were some efforts by a team to perpetrate a group,” the Commissioner said.
He added that the force, however, remains committed to working closely with other law enforcement agencies to combat the drug trade.
“This has been a problem for years, the fact that we are continuing to detect drug, this means people are still plying their trade despite our efforts.”
He added that despite the efforts of the police there will still be people who will swallow the drug and others who will continue to find innovative ways to move the drug from one point to another.
