Aimed at boosting the writing capabilities of young, ambitious individuals, the Caribbean Press in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has introduced a Poetry and Short Story competition.
The Caribbean Press was established in 2009 by the Government of Guyana to reprint out-of-print, and rare books on Guyana and to publish contemporary writings by Guyanese and Caribbean writers. The idea of such a publishing house was first mooted during Carifesta X, in an effort to leave an enduring legacy of the festival staged by this country.
The other main activity of the new publishing house is to encourage new writings by Guyanese children by four methods namely literary competitions, workshops, performances and publications.
Rules of the competition
Guyanese resident in Guyana are eligible to enter and entries ought to be type written on one side and double-spaced. Two copies of each entry must be submitted and competitors may submit up to three entries in categories opened to them.
Entries may also be written in English or creolese and it has been noted that working the ‘green’ theme is preferable.
The Poetry Competition is intended for primary school students under 12 years of age and poems should not be more than 30 lines.
The Short Story Competition, on the other hand, is intended for secondary school students between 13 and 18 years of age. Stories should not be more than 1,000 words. Each entry ought to be accompanied by an electronic copy but this is not obligatory. However, it essential that entries must be the original unpublished work of the competitor and this should be verifiable if the need arise.
It must also be noted that entries to each competition must detail on a separate cover sheet certain particulars including: competition entered, full name, age, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address and name of school attending.
There is no entry fee but submissions should be sent to Mr Petamber Persaud, c/o Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Main Street, Georgetown. The closing date for entries submission is the 15th of next month and all poems and stories entered must be made available for publication in an anthology to be published by the Caribbean Press.
For further information on the competition persons can contact Mr Petamber Persaud on telephone number 226-006 and/or email him at [email protected].
Some 40 pieces are expected to be selected at the end of the competition and those will be published. In addition the authors of the outstanding pieces will become eligible to be a part of a writing workshop where they will be guided on ways to improve their style of writing.
