The Berbice High School of New Amsterdam carried away all three top prizes when the Berbice Cricket Board announced the winners of its annual essay competition for Secondary Schools in the ancient county.
Melissa Persaud a 1st Form student at the school was named the winner with Electice Bell in 2nd position and Anurudha Kumkarran 3rd.
The Board had invited school children and members of sports clubs in Berbice to submit a 350 – 450 word essay on the topic “The importance of sports in the development of youths in Berbice”. A total of 132 essays were submitted and were judged by a panel of three experienced retired educators.
Ms Persaud in her essay highlighted the effect sports have on youths especially discipline, hard work, motivation and dedication. She also argued that sports teaches youths to stay away from drugs, crime and other social ills while at the same time encourages them to place greater emphasis on education. Ms Persaud used the example of a former West Indies Cricketer who she said was able to be the best in his field because he was highly educated and was able to think on his feet.
Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee Mr. Hilbert Foster explained that the Berbice Board determined that education plays major roles in every young person who play the game in Berbice. A policy has already been in place where all young cricketers representing the county must be in school and complete their education.
The essay competition was just one of the educational programmes scheduled for 2010 with a Quiz Competition being the next in late June. Mr. Foster congratulated the winner and expressed the Berbice Cricket Board’s gratitude to all the students who took part in the educational programme.
Berbice Cricket Board Secretary, Angela Haniff, who is also a member of the Special Events Committee, in handing over the prizes challenged all youths in Berbice to say “Yes to Education, No the Drugs” and to be disciplined and committed in everything they do in their lives.
The Berbice Cricket Board, she said, strongly believes that education and talent must go hand in hand if success is to be achieved.
Ms Persaud received $30,000 in education and sports items, Ms Bell, a pair of batting pads and an education kit and Ms Kumkarran a pair of batting gloves and an educational kit.
