Some seven records have been shattered and one equaled after two days of action at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) 2010 Independence Meet which is taking place at the Castellani Pool, Homstretch Avenue.
Leading the record haul is 13 year-old Britany van Lange who shattered the 800m, 400m and 50m freestyle records. Van Lange, who has been turning in consistent record breaking performances ever since the Goodwill Championships in Barbados last year, erased her old 800m free time of 10:32.69 set at the Mash Meet in February, setting a new standard of 10:27.07.
The Dorado Speed Swim Club athlete competing in the 13-14 category clocked 33.86 in the 50m free to knock out the old mark of 34.26 while the new record in the 400m free is 5:04.32 which bettered the old record of 5:09.37.
Niall Roberts another Dorado member competing in the boys 18 and over category smashed the previous 50m butterfly record of 26.72 with a new mark of 25.28. Roberts also set a new mark of 53.95 in the 100m free eclipsing the old record of 54.47.
Athena Gaskin competing in the girls 13-14 division achieved a new record of 2:46.14 in the 200m individual medley replacing the old record of 2:49.18.
Soroya Simmons was in record breaking mood in the girls 13-14 100m backstroke race achieving a new standard of 1:17.82 which replaced the old record of 1:20.02. Sixteen year-old Noelle Smith equaled the national 50m butterfly record of 32.64S.
After two days of intense competition, seven swimmers have attained qualifying times for the Goodwill Swimming Championships, to be held in Suriname from August 13th to 15th.
The meet will conclude today with the following events; 200m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle.
Meanwhile, swimmers, parents and all other spectators can look forward to the 50m Freestyle which will almost certainly determine the male and female who are “Fastest in the Pool”.
The respective winners will each take home 12-karat gold “medals” (pendants) donated by Topaz – “The only Jewellers”.
