An Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam resident and mother of five, who was previously convicted on a narcotics matter, was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison and fined $30,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
On this occasion she had six grams of cannabis.
The case for the prosecution as presented by Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, was that on Tuesday last (May 18), a group of police were on a mobile patrol in the Angoy’s Avenue area when they observed the defendant, Viola Sammy, acting in a suspicious manner.
She was seen walking along Patrick Dam with her hand folded in a cuff. Upon seeing the approaching police vehicle, the woman’s hand immediately went to the back pocket of her pants.
Sammy was stopped and searched and a small paper parcel with leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant was found on her person. She was told of the offence, arrested and charged.
In court, the woman who was only released from prison about four months ago, begged the court to be lenient on her. She told the magistrate that she has five children to take care of, the eldest being 15 years of age.
However, Prosecutor Dayaram was quickly on his feet to clarify the existing circumstances.
He told the court that what the woman was saying was not entirely the truth. He said that three of the woman’s children are living at an orphanage while the other two are living with relatives.
He also told the court that the woman had previously been convicted for similar matters.
The magistrate then sentenced Sammy. (Samuel Whyte)
