Dear Editor,
Born on the 28th March, 1969 Thomas United utility stalwart Deon Barnwell became the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls youngest World Cup captain on April 4, 1988.
Barnwell was at the helm when Guyana engaged Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifier at Camp Ayanganna. The Twin Island Republic won four nil and immediately the eighteen year old was replaced by debutant Santos player Andrew Grogan for the return fixture in Arima.
The first man to captain Guyana at World Cup football was Santos’ Maurice Enmore in 1976 against Suriname. Guyana won the opening match two nil and lost the return fixture three nil in Paramaribo.
Thomas United’s Earl O’Neal emulated Enmore when he was appointed captain for Guyana 1980 World Cup qualifying campaign. Guyana defeated Grenada five –two at GCC Bourda then traveled to the Spice Isle and eliminated the host three-two.
They however suffered losses to Suriname one nil at GCC and four nil in the return fixture in Paramaribo; they also had losses to Cuba one nil in Havana and three nil in the return fixture at McKenzie Sports Club that automatically eliminated Guyana from the 1982 World Cup finals.
Pele’s Gordon Braithwaite was the man wearing the Captaincy arm band when the land of many waters contested the 1984 World Cup qualifiers against Suriname. Guyana lost one nil in Paramaribo and drew the return fixture one all at GCC Bourda. Thomas United’s Deon Barnwell was the man in charge when Guyana lost four nil to Trinidad and Tobago at Camp Ayanganna 1988.
Santos Andrew Grogan was appointed on debut for the return fixture in Arima, Guyana lost one nil.
Policeman Ewart Grenville surprisingly wore the captaincy arm band when Guyana lost World Cup qualifiers against Suriname two-one 1992 at GCC Bourda. They also lost the return fixture one-nil in Paramaribo.
Western Tigers Anthony Stanton was the national captain when Guyana lost World Cup qualifiers two-one against Grenada at GCC Bourda March 1996. They were humbled five nil in the return fixture in St. George’s.
Another Western Tigers player Shawn Beveney was in charge when Grenada thrashed Guyana six nil in St. George’s in 2004. Grenada also won the return fixture three one at Blairmont.
Netrockers Charles Pollard was the national captain when Guyana lost its last World Cup qualifiers against Suriname one nil in Paramaribo and three one in the return fixture at the Providence National Stadium 2008.
Could the record show if any other eighteen year old from North and Central America and the Caribbean ever wore the captaincy arm band in a World Cup qualifier? If not Guyanese Deon Barnwell achievement against Trinidad and Tobago at Camp Ayanganna April, 4th 1988 is historical.
