USA based rifleman Sigmund Douglas said he is backing Guyana to excel at the upcoming Caribbean Fullbore Rifle Shooting Championships set for the Island of Barbados from May 23-30, 2010.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport from his USA base via telephone, Douglas, who has been coming back to the Caribbean to represent the land of his birth ever since 1991, declared that it’s a great honor and pleasure to compete for Guyana.
“It’s a really great feeling and privilege for me to do this each year since migrating to the USA and I’m backing our team to take care of the opposition who we are not underestimating but we will take care of the business of defending our titles with pride. I will always be there for my country.” The Guyanese team will be captained by Mahendra Persaud and includes a number of seasoned campaigners the likes of Ransford Goodluck, Richard Fields, Derick Narine, Paul Slowe and the returning Paul Archer who is based in Canada.
Douglas, who started his career back in 1983 as a junior, reflected briefly on the challenges they faced then with equipment as opposed to now.
He informed that he did a shoulder surgery last year and is looking forward to performing well for his country next week.
“I’m looking forward to Barbados being successful for the team and myself. Since acquiring another fullbore rifle, I have been able to practice much more and am looking forward to good scores in Barbados.”
Douglas also disclosed that he intends to compete much more often and will be participating at Bisley this year and also in Canada.
Communicating with Kaieteur Sport via email Derick Narine stated that it is always an honour to represent ones country in any type of sporting event. “For me Guyana will always be home no matter where I roam.”
Narine noted that it was unfortunate that like Douglas and the USA crew, not having the kind of facilities they were accustomed poses challenges in preparing.
“But I do try to keep as fit as possible and prepare myself mentally for competition. Having said that, it must be understood that not being with my closest friends and teammates in Guyana is very hard, especially at this time when you need to iron out all the kinks. The expertise and advice you receive from Ransford Goodluck, Mahendra Persaud, Paul Slowe and Richard ‘Dickie’ Fields is second to none – These gentlemen are my mentors.”
Narine concluded that they will all do their best to ensure Guyana remains at the top of the sport in the Region.
Douglas, Narine and John Fraser will touch down in Barbados on Sunday afternoon while Paul Archer will arrive on Saturday.
