Camera, lights, action—the scripts have been read and tonight the various players are expected to remember their parts or face expulsion when the Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza enters the quarter final stage at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
Santos and Seawall FC face off in the curtain raiser and while football pundits can expect keen rivalry in this match it is the feature attraction between BK Int. Western Tigers and Fruta Conquerors that has triggered heated debate.
Yesterday afternoon the Tigers were hard at work at the West Ruimveldt Playfield under the watchful eyes of their coach, Patrice Ram. Well toned bodies glistened with sweat as each member of the team applied himself to the task at hand.
The team that won the last edition of the Kashif and Shanghai Football extravaganza has never won the Mayor’s Cup trophy and Ram feels that his men cannot yet boast of being the best. “This year we are on a roll and would cart off the Mayor’s Cup,” he boasted. “We took twenty years to win the K&S trophy and we intend to move on to greater things,” he concluded.
If custodian Derrick Carter, K&S honour player for his athleticism between the uprights, is in top form then the Tigers may just be able to back their chat.
Their opponents, Fruta Conquerors are also nurturing great plans for the trophy. Last year their progress was halted, also in the quarter finals, by a rampaging Alpha United who defeated them 4-2 on penalty kicks. This year Ram has promised to inflict similar pains on the Fruta Orange Juice sponsored team. But are they equipped to perform this feat?
The Tigers had recently lost the services of four of its key members after a mini disruption earlier in the year. They would be playing minus striker, Devon Millington, midfielder, Phillip Rowley and former captain, Delon Fraser. “We are not bothered by that,” said Ram. “We are fielding a young, vibrant team that would do wonders on the field,” he continued.
Fruta Conquerors is fielding players the likes of Lester Peters, Jolyon Harry and Delon Williams in their lineup.
These three would be in charge of the midfield area and the pundit needs no reminder of their efficiency.
Add the competence of striker Jomo Hinds and Mustapha Haqq who alternates between the midfield and attacking positions and a sure pick seems uncertain. While the Tigers are yet to claim the Mayor’s Cup, Conquerors has had the distinction of winning this accolade four times, representing the most times any team has done that.
“Our strength lies in the midfield and we are coming hard at the opposition,” affirmed coach, Jevon Rodrigues in earlier comments. “We aim to come out victorious,” he concluded.
The battle lines are drawn. Both teams are spouting confidence and are anxiously awaiting the first whistle tonight. Who will come out victorious? That question would only be answered this evening when the two teams face off. The action gets underway at 18:00hrs sharp.
