Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed motor vehicle dealer Pradeep Abdool and shipping agent Sheik Farouk on $65,000 bail each after they both pleaded not guilty to behaving in a disorderly manner and assaulting a police officer.
It was alleged that Abdool and Farouk on May 19 at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, behaved in a disorderly manner in the presence of a police officer. It was further alleged that on the same day the duo assaulted police officer Shawn Mc Phoy.
The two men pleaded not guilty and were represented by attorney Euclin Gomes.
The lawyer in his bail application said that his two clients had unblemished records prior to the incident. He told the court that both men are reputable and would pose no flight risk if granted bail.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail, stating that the defendants had no regard for the law.
The prosecutor explained that on the day in question, the police officer stopped Sheik Farouk because he was driving in a dangerous manner. Pradeep Abdool was also in the car.
According to the prosecutor the two men started arguing with the police.
“My worship they told the officer that they were in charge of the country and he shouldn’t have stopped them” Telford said.
He opined that the officer who stopped the two men may have saved a life since Sheik Farouk was under the influence of alcohol.
The prosecutor said that the men started pointing their hands in the officer’s face and using obscene language.
Telford noted that more charges would be instituted against the two defendants, in relation to the traffic violations.
Magistrate Robertson granted the two men bail and ordered them to return to court on July 7.
The matter was also transferred to court two for trial.
