A two-storey wood and concrete building owned by Rohan Harrinarayan, 50, went up in flames shortly after 22:00 hours last night.
According to reports, Harrinarayan was alone in the house, located at Babu John Street , Port Mourant, Corentyne.
The day before he had evicted his wife Jasmattie, 51, and their 16-year-old daughter, Parbattie, a student of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, after a severe bout of alcohol. He was said to be a heavy drinker.
The daughter is in the midst of writing examinations.
People in the neighbourhood said that he is believed to have started the fire that flattened the house. He is now in police custody at the Whim Police Station.
