– Digicel to host event at 2pm tomorrow
The launch of the much-anticipated Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Under-23 Games will take place at 2pm tomorrow at telecommunications giants, Digicel, who forms part of the major sponsorship of the track and field event.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce confirmed yesterday that the event will be launched tomorrow at 2pm following Monday’s postponement.
He said that Digicel has agreed to host the meeting in their boardroom.
Boyce said that the company has asked them to provide four athletes, two male and two females, for the launching of the benchmark event while indicating that he is optimistic that the highly anticipated contest will finally get underway.
“The weather has been changing gradually but we want to inform all those concerned at various levels that we will be going ahead with the meet whether or not it rains,” Boyce briefly told this newspaper via telephone.
He said that the meet, which was postponed from the first weekend this month to May 27 because of inclement weather, cannot suffer another postponement. He said that with two days of sunshine, the AAG will be able to prepare the ground.
The meet is to be held at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, but consistent rain had prevented groundsmen from preparing the venue. “We are hoping to put the ground in shape by next Wednesday,” Boyce continued.
Boyce had indicated that the AAG fundraiser, which is also planned for the same day, is to go in tandem with the meet since that was the initial idea.
The Under-23 Championship will bring together the Crème de le Crème in local athletics.
