Dear Editor,
According to the findings of NACTA’s ongoing tracking survey, Trinidad’s snap elections of May 24 remain too close to call. However, an Ansa McAl poll by UWI put the opposition UNC coalition way ahead winning a landslide victory.
Another unrelated UWI poll gives the ruling PNM a 22-16 majority with three seats too close to call. The NACTA poll has the incumbent PNM ahead in 19 seats and the opposition UNC ahead in 18 seats and four seats could go either way with the PNM ahead in two seats and the UNC ahead in two seats.
A party needs 21 of the 41 seats to form a government. What appears certain is no party would get more than 23 seats – 23 maximum for PNM with 22 maximum for UNC although the UNC says its poll shows 28 seats and the PNM says its poll shows 29 seats. A 21-20 or 22-19 seat scenario appears more likely.
The Ansa McAl poll has the UNC leading with 47 per cent to 25 per cent for the PNM. This is down from last week when Ansa McAl rated the PNM 57 per cent to 17 per cent for PNM.
The NACTA had UNC 50 per cent to 40 per cent last week and 51 per cent to 41 per cent this week. The UNC has stalled while the PNM is gaining.
The good news for the UNC is their leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar, is extremely likeable. A majority of voters prefer her as Prime Minister over Manning. Kamla is also more liked for P.M over Winston Dookeran, the leader of the COP, one of the alliance partners. Kamla leads Manning by two per cent and Dookeran by 31 per cent.
The findings show Kamla enjoys overwhelming support among Indians and a small percentage of Africans and Mixed for the position of P.M with only a small number Indians backing Dookeran.
The Indians say they are backing Kamla because they feel she has a very good chance of capturing power from the PNM. Those Africans and Mixed race voters who are backing Kamla say they are doing so because it is time for a female Prime Minister and they want change.
