DEAR EDITOR,
I wish to offer my sincere congratulations to His Excellency, President Bharrat Jagdeo on his acquisition of the prestigious Champion of the Earth Award. I have listened to various speeches and interviews of President Jagdeo where he highlights and promotes the Low Carbon Development Strategy. He has said publicly that his Government will lead the world by example on this issue.
The President must recognize that carbon emissions from motor vehicles is one of the major sources of pollution worldwide. In fact, in his speech at Liliendaal Convention Centre, he issued a call for Guyanese to use vehicles that are fuel efficient so as to reduce carbon emissions.
I wish to assure you Mr. President that the Guyanese population is ready to answer your call and to purchase new vehicles that are fuel efficient and which are environmentally friendly and also to dispose of the old fuel guzzlers that predominate our roadways. Unfortunately, the exorbitant import-duties and taxes which are levied against new vehicles, prevents the average Guyanese citizens from purchasing new and fuel efficient vehicles.
I wish to challenge you Mr. President to truly lead by example and demonstrate to the developed world your Government’s true and real commitment to the Low Carbon model of development by lowering customs duties and taxes on imported vehicles so that Guyanese from all walks of life can demonstrate with you our national commitment by importing new and fuel efficient vehicles.
Jagdesh Singh
