Dear Editor,
I was in the teaching service for thirty-seven years. I started my teaching career in 1967.
I started to contribute to the compulsory National Insurance Scheme since its inception in 1969 until I retired as a Senior Trained Graduate Teacher in 2004.
My contribution statement from NIS has contributions starting from 1969 to 1987…these are reasonably accurate, but those years from 1988 to 2004 are either completely missing or grossly inaccurate. I am very shocked at this because I have continuous service and I paid full compulsory contributions through my employer: – the Ministry of Education.
In 1976 I entered the Teacher’s Training College in Kingston, Georgetown (through an in-service programme). In 1978 I graduated as a trained teacher. I continued teaching, and in 1996, I entered the University of Guyana to pursue studies in the Degree Programme (in-service also). In 2000, I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Education Degree and I became a trained Graduate Teacher.
I can’t understand why NIS cannot update my contributions from 1988 to 2004. Despite my repeated requests to do so, nothing has been done. As you can observe from my attached Contribution Sheet which was issued this month, the NIS has skipped reporting for ten years and been grossly inaccurate for seven years. The Ministry of Education has issued a record of my service since 1967 to 2004. Their statement of my service is very accurate.
Here I must express my gratitude to the Ministry of Education for being so prompt, courteous and accurate.
What is NIS doing?
What hurts the most is that the seventeen years which NIS is deleting are my trained and senior graduate years in the teaching service, i.e. 1988 to 2004.
It’s been over two years since I have requested that NIS resolve this matter and nothing has been done so far. Not to mention the lack of courtesy, honesty or promptness in the process. I am tired and disgusted at NIS’s treatment of this matter and I am seeking their attention through the national media.
I hope that this plea catches the attention of the relevant authorities at the NIS offices and also creates national awareness of matters like these.
On the same note I am seeking relevant advice so that this matter can be corrected as early as possible.
My NIS numbers are B-9223736 and A-1047190
